Picking the right fishing line for your baitcaster or bass spinning reel can often be overlooked, but any seasoned bass angler will tell you that using the right bass fishing lines can make all the difference.
I never paid attention to choosing the ideal line types for any given situation. I was far too focused on the rod and reel I was using, and more eager to go fishing than have to think about which fishing line for bass would work better.

- Thin diameter for better casts
- Low stretch for increased sensitivity
- Low vis and low stretch

Our Best Fishing Lines For Bass
Best Mono Line
SpiderWire Ultracast Ultimate Monofilament Fishing Line
One of the best fishing lines out there for mono enthusiasts, this fishing line comes with low stretch, low vis, low memory, is super strong and has a small diameter. This stacks up to long accurate casting, fooling fish and landing them with ease.
SpiderWire Ultracast Ultimate Monofilament Fishing Line
The top bass fishing monofilament line in my opinion is the SpiderWire Ultracast Ultimate Monofilament Line.
It hits every nail on the head when it comes to monofilament line, from reduced tangles through low memory to reduced stretch which helps with both casting and fighting fish.
Diameter
This bass monofilament line is designed to be thin with a diameter of just 0.16 inches in a 20 lb class and this has a range of benefits.
Not only will it cast long distances due to less wind resistance but you can also get a load more line onto your casting reels or spinning reels, and some extra line on the spool never hurts, especially if you hook up to a trophy fish.
Line Memory
Its reduced line memory takes away those annoying coils of poor quality fishing lines that inevitably tangle and the low stretch means more fish pulling power and better sensitivity.
This means you can feel how your lure is swimming, feel every bite, and can control a bass running for cover in the fight. Plus with its clear color, it works well for line shy fish as they will struggle to see it.
Abrasion Resistant
To top it all off, this best fishing line for bass is also a strong monofilament line with great abrasion resistance and knot strength.
But, as with all mono fishing lines, it will absorb water and be degraded over time by sunlight, so it’s not quite as durable as fluorocarbon lines or braided lines.
Specs
- Strands: 1
- Yards: 270
- Color: Clear
- Material: Nylon
- Weight: 6-20 lbs
Pros
- Solid knot strength
- Lots of bite sensitivity
- Low memory for less tangles
- Low line visibility in the water
- Strong with high abrasion resistance
- Small line diameter for more line capacity
- Very little stretch compared to other monofilament lines
Cons
- Not as durable as other lines/types
Best Braided Line
Sufix 832 Advanced Superline Braid
Built to last with 8 strands of two fibers woven together, these fishing lines for bass come with a ton of strength and abrasion resistance. It’s very thin so you can load your reels up, casts like a dream, and provides awesome sensitivity with close to no stretch.
Sufix 832 Advanced Superline Braid
The best braided fishing line for bass in my eyes is the Sufix 832 Advanced Superline Braid.
This bass braided line is designed to do a little more than most braided lines on the market from holding its color and washing out to being the right color for less visibility on the green waters bass thrive in.
Diameter
As one of the best braided lines around this fishing line comes with almost no stretch whatsoever and this amounts to incredible bit sensitivity, immense pulling power and great castability.
Casting
Being so thin and combined with the lack of stretch, this braided line cuts through the air and has excellent energy transfer making both long and accurate casts as easy as it gets.
The thin diameter also allows you to pile a lot more line on the spool when compared to many other monofilament lines or fluoro lines of the same breaking strain.
Material
This braided fishing line is also built to last utilizing 8 strands, 7 strands of dyneema and 1 stranded of GORE Performance Fiber, woven together.
This gives this multi fiber braided fishing line incredible line strength, abrasion resistance, and durability.
The only downside of this braided line for bass fishing is that it comes with a touch of memory but most bass anglers don’t find this to cause tangles as it’s not bad at all.
Specs
- Strands: 8
- Yards: 150
- Color: Green
- Weight: 6 lbs – 80 lbs
- Material: GORE Performance Fiber and Dyneema
Pros
- Holds its colors
- Very strong and durable
- Super sensitive to bites
- Low visibility in the water
- Zero stretch for solid hookups
- Better abrasion resistance than other line choices
- Super thin diameter vs breaking strain
Cons
- Some line memory
Best Fluorocarbon Line
Catch Co Googan Squad 100% Pure Fluorocarbon
Excellent quality that lasts combined with low memory and stretch plus being invisible underwater makes this the best line of anyone looking to use fluorocarbon on their bass reels.
Catch Co Googan Squad 100% Pure Fluorocarbon
When it comes to finesse fishing for bass, especially in crystal clear water, fluorocarbon lines are the way to go and Catch Co Googan Squad 100% Pure Fluorocarbon is the best line to go for.
This fluorocarbon fishing line is virtually invisible in the water and it’s a great choice as both a main line and as a fluorocarbon leader. Bass and any other fish species on the planet will not see this line and you’ll be able to fool them while worm fishing or topwater fishing.
Stretch
Other great properties of this fluorocarbon line includes low stretch, but more stretch than braid.
This makes it ideal as a leader with a touch to stretch to add to your braid but also awesome as a main line as you’ll still be in control when a bass runs for a snag.
Memory
These fluorocarbon lines also come with little memory and therefore won’t coil or cause tangles. It also provides excellent knot strength and it’s very abrasion resistant so it will last a while.
The one thing about this clear line is that it is not cheap so filling a reel with it might be a little expensive.

- Color: Clear
- Material: Fluoro
- Yards: 200 yards
- Weight: 6 lbs – 25 lbs
Pros
- Excellent knot strength

Power Pro Spectra Fiber Braided Fishing Line
Built from 16 strands of quality dyneema, this is one of the best fishing lines when it comes to durability. With its zero stretch you can hook fish in just an instant and hold them out of heavy cover with ease and its casting performance is awesome too.
Power Pro Spectra Fiber Braided Fishing Line
Another excellent bass fishing line is the Power Pro Spectra Fiber Braided Fishing Line.
This line is built out of 16 strands making it close to the best fishing line when it comes to durability and abrasion resistance as the multiple strands handle everything from big fish to sharp rocks.
Stretch
It has no stretch whatsoever, which as you can guess by now, means super sensitivity for running lures like deep diving crankbaits or topwater lures, and holding fish out of heavy cover with ease.
Casting
This line is also super thing vs it’s pound test so when adding it to casting or spinning gear you can get a ton of line on them.
The low stretch and thinness of the line also translates to excellent casting distance and accuracy as it cuts through the air and has fantastic energy transfer.
The one downside to this line is that it arrives quite sticky and this can lead to tangles and backlashes. To get around this, let the line out behind a boat and wind it in a few times.
Specs
- Strands: 16
- Yards: 150 – 3000
- Material: Dyneema
- Weight: 8 lbs to 80 lbs
- Color: Green / Yellow / White

Seaguar Smackdown Performance Braided Fishing Line
The Smackdown line is super thin and is the best bass fishing line around when casting accuracy matters more than anything else. You have immense control over where your lure lands with this line but being so thin it doesn’t handle abrasion well.
Seaguar Smackdown Performance Braided Fishing Line
The Seaguar Smackdown Performance Braided Fishing Line is an excellent choice for bass.
fishing where casting accuracy means more than anything, and you’re not fishing around heavy cover.
Diameter
This line is incredibly thin being made from 8 micro fibers and this low diameter gives you incredible control over your casts. It runs through the guides of your spinning gear silently with zero friction and the energy transfer is on point for dropping lures just where you want them to be.
Durability
But, being so thin makes this braid a little open to abrasion so if you’re planning to target bass near heavy cover, be careful as this line can rub out quite fast. Its low diameter also means it can bite into itself on the spool and get locked up, so be sure to spool it very tight to avoid this.
It’s a solid line that holds knots well to your leader plus it’s low memory and low stretch makes hooking fish, feeling bites, and avoiding tangles easy.
Specs
- Strands: 8
- Yards: 150
- Material: Dyneema
- Weight: 10 lbs – 65 lbs
- Color: Hi Vis Flash Green
Pros
- Holds knots well
- Awesome casting accuracy
- Low stretch and low memory
- High vis color for line watching
- Exceptionally thin and casts well
Cons

Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon Fishing Line
An excellent quality line that handles rough abrasion well and provides strong knots. It’s thin, invisible to fish, and ideal for clear water fishing but it is a bit stiff making tying knots a little harder than usual.
Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon Fishing Line
The Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon Fishing Line is one of the top fluorocarbon lines out there that works well as both a fluorocarbon leader and as a main line on your reel too.
Visibility
This fluorocarbon line is invisible in the water making it perfect for bass fishing in crystal clear rivers and lakes. It has low stretch but still has a little making it good for long distance hook sets plus fishing treble hooked lures and topwater lures.
Diameter
It’s quite a thin line for its pound test meaning you can fill enough line on your reels and this also ensures good casting distances as the line cuts through the air.
This also a strong line that handles abrasion well and knots seat well too but it is a stiff line which makes tying the knots a little more difficult than with flexible soft mono.
Specs
- Strands: 1
- Color: Clear

- Yards: 200 / 660/ 1200 Full Specs

KastKing World’s Premium Monofilament Fishing Line
A great mono fishing line for any anglers on a budget who still want quality. This line is strong, easy to handle, knots well and the low memory plus the small diameter make it a delight to cast with.
KastKing World’s Premium Monofilament Fishing Line
The KastKing World’s Premium Monofilament Fishing Line is a great mono line to fill your bass reel with as it’s durable, reliable, doesn’t tangle and is easy to manage too.
Unlike other monos, this one is built with low absorption meaning it doesn’t absorb as much water as other mono lines, keeping it stronger over time.
Memory and Diameter
The line also has minimal memory so it won’t coil after sitting on your reel and its small diameter ensures that you can cast accurately and push distances too. Despite being thin, this line is also strong, handling abrasion well and keeping knots strong too.
Color Options
This is one of the few lines that comes in a range of colors. The clear color line provides little visibility to fish while the brightly colored lines make it easier for anglers to see them on the water. The one issue with the colored lines is that the color fades quite quickly.
Specs

- Material: Nylon
- Yards: 300 / 600
- Weight: 4 lbs – 30 lbs
Pros
- Very affordable
- Low vis in the water

P-Line Tactical Premium Fluorocarbon
This line comes with a lot of memory and it’s great for putting on your reel’s spool but it’s perfect as a leader. It’s soft, easy to tie knots with, super strong and it’s invisible to fish too. It’s perfect for adding to the end of your braid or mono.
P-Line Tactical Premium Fluorocarbon
The P-Line Tactical Premium Fluorocarbon is an awesome line for use as a leader while bass fishing but it has too much memory to be used as a main line on your reel spool.
If you were to put it on your reel you will have coils, tangles, and backlashes in your future and you’ll spend time untangling the line instead of fishing.
Memory
The reason it has a lot of memory is because the line is designed to be soft, supple, and thus easy to tie knots with.
Once tied, the knots are super strong and the line’s invisibility combined with its good abrasion resistance means it’s perfect for fooling fish and pulling them out of snags.
Specs
- Strands: 1
- Yards: 200
- Color: Clear
- Material: Fluoro
- Weight: 6 lbs – 20 lbs
Pros
- Invisible to fish

What is a bass fishing line?
A bass fishing line is just like any other fishing line, but in this case it’s simply the line you choose to put on your reel to go bass fishing with.
You can choose from fluoro, mono, or braided line to fill your entire reel with and the key to finding the best fishing line for bass is picking the right line type for any given situation.
What’s the best type of line for bass fishing?
each line has different qualities that make it better for each bass fishing situation…
This is a hard question to answer as each line has different qualities that make it better for each bass fishing situation.
It’s my opinion that the best fishing line for bass to use is either mono or braid on your reel depending on the qualities you want from the line (detailed below) and then add a fluoro top shot or leader to the remaining line as it’s invisible to fish so they won’t see it and eat your lure/bait.
Mono
Mono is the most affordable and the most common fishing line type and it’s also strong, resistant to abrasion, and when clear provides low visibility too. Mono also floats, making it great for fishing lures on the surface for bass and it stretches and thus works well for soft hook sets with treble hooks.
But, mono is thicker than braid meaning you can’t fit as much on your reel, cast as far as with braid, and pulling fish out of heavy cover isn’t so easy either as it stretches.
Braid
Braid doesn’t stretch and it’s super thin making it great for line capacity and providing awesome casting performance.
You can bully fish with braid and it’s awesome for hard hook sets but it’s highly visible in water and it can rip hooks out of fish with treble hooks.
Fluoro
Fluoro lines are the least visible line in the water and is always the best choice as a leader, since the fish can’t see it.
Fluorocarbon sinks too so it’s great for fishing deep lures and it also comes with some stretch making it great for all hook sets plus its abrasion resistance is excellent so it won’t break under lots of strain.
