Sunroad FR851 Smart watch

Sunroad FR851 Smart watch

The Sunroad FR 851 smartwatch is exceptionally affordable as smart watches go, it’ll fit anyone’s budget.

Build

The face is pretty large and easy to see.

It’s made with a stainless steel case that’ll resist corrosion and bumps with a high anti-friction mineral glass that is scratch-resistant too. Together they make this watch pretty durable.

When you add the 50-meter water-resistant rating plus the nylon strap, it has enough going on to survive a life of abuse by a fisherman.

Features

Like any digital watch, it tells the time, has alarms, a countdown timer, a stopwatch, and time zones.

The key features we fishermen are interested in aren’t half bad either.

These watches come with a compass so you can find your way and a barometer with a weather forecast. Together they let you know the barometric pressure to warn you about any big weather changes on the way, so you can dodge storms while out fishing.

There’s also a thermometer so you can check the water and air tempt, and change your fishing tactics accordingly.

Plus a pedometer, for knowing just how far you’ve walked while you’re fishing.

Sunrise and Sunset Times

One of the best features is the sunrise and sunset times, allowing you to plan your fishing day to capitalize on the dawn and dusk bites.

The downsides of this rather budget watch are numerous.

Firstly, there’s no warranty, so it breaks in the first week, it’s your problem.

Best Tide Watch For Fishing

Timex Intelligent Quartz Tide-Temp-Compass

Simple, sleek and it gives you some great fishing data through its key features.

Timex Intelligent Quartz Tide-Temp-Compass

Times is one of the most famous watch brands for reliability and this Timex watch is simple, sleek and it gives you some great fishing data through its key features.

Build

It comes with a large face that’s protected by a stainless steel case and mineral glass crystal with a nylon strap and it’s water-resistant to 100 meters.

It screams fishing durability with a build like this.

The dials are in analog, so if you’ve been using digital you might have to remember how to tell the time again.

Features

It features an analog compass that sits with the hour and minute hands plus a temperature sensor and it tracks the tides.

These are all beneficial features for fishing, you can find your way, know what’s going on with the tides and when, plus you can get a read on the water temperature too.

Analog Compass

Unfortunately, the compass seems to lose calibration on rare occasions after a few months, so it’s not so reliable.

Also, you’ll have to set the tides at home for the tracker to work, but once they’re set, they sure are accurate.

Something else that might get annoying while you’re fishing is the oversized buttons, you can easily press them by mistake when you use your hands, so chances are you’ll spend some time fiddling to get the watch back to the right settings.

Specs

  • Model: T2N720
  • Dial size: 45mm
  • Dial material: Stainless steel case with mineral glass crystal
  • Strap Material: Silicone
  • Watch Movement: Quartz movement
  • Display: Analog

SUNROAD Outdoor Fishing Watch

A step up from the Sunroad FR851, It has loads more fishing features for fishermen.

SUNROAD Outdoor Fishing Watch

The SUNROAD Outdoor Fishing Watch is quite a step up from the FR851 watch we looked at first, with loads more fishy features for us fishermen to play.

Features

The watch has a compass, barometer, and altimeter so you know your bearing, altitude, and if any storms are coming in.

The watch records all the air pressure changes for 24-hours and displays them in a chart for you, letting you see what happened when and if it affects your fishing trip.

The watch also shows you the water, air temperature and the weather forecast for your location, so you can fish accordingly.

It even lets you know how far you walked and your elevation change.

Build

The dial window of this watch is pretty average in size at 1.89 inches but is still easy to see. It sits in a durable housing of stainless steel and glass, so it’ll take a knock or two as well, and it’s water-resistant to 50 meters.

The negatives to this watch are a bit sad, as it makes the watch a little redundant for us fishermen.

Compass and Barometer

The compass and barometer aren’t very accurate.

A storm warning might not arrive when it should and following a compass that’s off by even 1 or 2 degrees when you’re out at sea can send you to the wrong country if you follow it too long.

Oh, and the buckle can break easily.

Specs

  • Model: FR802
  • Dial size: 1.89 inches
  • Dial material: Stainless steel bezel and glass
  • Strap Material: Rubber
  • Watch Movement: Digital
  • Display: Digital
  • Water-resistance: 50 M

  • Change your fishing techniques through water and air temperature readings
  • Track walking distance and elevation change
  • Overall durable and waterproof design

Cons

  • The buckle can break easily
  • Compass and barometer are not that accurate

Best Smartwatch For Fishing

SUUNTO Traverse Alpha GPS Watch

Specifically made for hunting and fishing with key features that make a difference.

SUUNTO Traverse Alpha GPS Watch

The Suunto Traverse Alpha watch is specifically made for hunting and fishing with key features that make a difference.

The Suunto Traverse Alpha watch comes in a Suunto core all-black design that looks quite stealthy.

Build

The dial on the watch is large at 50 mm and easy to see, even at a glance.

It’s packed inside a 100-meter water-resistant stainless steel case with tough mineral glass and sits on a comfy silicone strap.

This watch is built to handle the everyday life of fishermen who tend to cover their shock-resistant watches in fish blood or bang them against the side of a boat.

Model

The brand Suunto makes great GPS watches and the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch is one of them.

The watch uses both GPS and GLONASS networks to give you awesome worldwide coverage and a quick fix on your position.

You can press go on the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch at your starting point and it’ll leave a breadcrumb trail of exactly where you have been, so you’ll know where you fished.

On top of the GPS feature, the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch also lets you know the tides, sunrise and sunset times, weather updates, storm warnings, and it has a moon phase calendar.

Connectivity

You can even connect the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch to your phone so you can get smart notifications like calendar updates, texts, and emails, there on the watch.

There are only two downsides to the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch.

One being that the tech system on the Suunto Traverse Alpha watch is quite hard to get your head around, to begin with

There are a lot of features on the watch to understand how to use it.

The other issue is that the battery can last up to 100 hours in GPS mode, but it can also only last 10 hours, which is a little short in my book for a long fishing trip.

Specs

  • Model: Suunto Traverse Alpha
  • Dial size: 50 mm
  • Dial material: Stainless steel bezel & sapphire crystal
  • Strap Material: Silicone
  • Watch Movement: Quartz movement
  • Display: LCD

  • Real-time GPS tracking so you know where you’ve fished
  • Mark waypoints for home and fishing spots to find them later
  • Weather updates and storm alerts so you know what’s coming

Rip Curl Rifles Digital Tide Surf Watch

Great for anyone who wants a small and sleek watch on their wrist and only needs rough tide data to make the fishing happen.

Rip Curl Rifles Digital Tide Surf Watch

The Rip Curl Rifles Tide Watch is great for anyone who wants a small and sleek watch on their wrist and only needs rough tide data to make the fishing happen.

It’s definitely more of a surf watch than a fishing watch due to this.

Build

The watch is super durable thanks to the polyurethane build with a plastic face, although the face does scratch quite easily, this doesn’t compromise the watches functionality though. It’s also waterproof to 100 meters, so it’s going to handle life in the water.

Tide Data

Inside the watch is the tide data for 500 locations and the watch serves it up in an easy to see graph or with numbers on the display. The watch tells you the tide height in feet and whether it’s coming in or going out.

It’s really useful for fishing but you have to be in one of the 500 locations for it to be accurate, as you can’t program in a local tide with this watch. It’s also pretty hard to set-up.

All in all, not the best watch for a fisherman, unless you happen to live in one of the tide locations.

Specs

  • Model: A1119-BLK
  • Dial size: 42 mm
  • Dial material: Polyurethane & plastic face
  • Strap Material: Polyurethane
  • Watch Movement: Quartz
  • Display: Digital
  • Water-resistance: 100m
  • Features: Tide tracker

Pros

  • Tide data for 500 locations
  • Easy to see tide data via graph or display
  • Light and comfortable to wear
  • Durable design and materials

Cons

  • Face scratches easily
  • Can’t program a local tide
  • Not easy to set

Casio G-Shock G-Rescue

A good fishing watch for anyone who wants something that can survive some serious punishment and only needs a rough idea of the tides and moon.

Casio G-Shock G-Rescue

Casio G-Shock is one of the best watch brands when it comes to durability.

Durability

These G-Shock watches feature some serious shock resistance so you can happily bash them around without any worries.

This is ideal when you’re holding on to something like an angry sailfish that’s whacking you with its bill and against the boat.

Water Resistance

The Casio G-Shock G-Rescue watch is water-resistant to 200 meters and this G-Shock watch works at incredibly low temperatures down to minus 4 Fahrenheit.

If you’re looking for an ice fishing watch, this is a solid bet.

Moon Phase Calendar

The other useful key features of the G-Shock G-Rescue watch are its moon phase calendar and its ability to tell you the tides of wherever you are in the world.

This lets you plan trips based on tides and react to them as they change while you’re out on the water, improving your fashion no end if you know how to play the tides.

Features

The downsides to this Casio G-shock watch are that it doesn’t have any more features for fishing than what we mentioned above, so it’s pretty limited.

Also, setting up the tide and moon data on this G-shock tide watch is not easy and requires some patience.

Once it’s set up, you don’t get much tide data, just whether it’s coming in or going out, rather than actual heights and whether it’s a spring or a neap tide.

Overall this Casio G-shock watch is a good fishing watch for anyone who wants something that can survive some serious punishment and only needs a rough idea of the tides and moon.

Specs

  • Model: G-7900A
  • Dial size: 50 mm
  • Dial material: Resin case with mineral dial window

  • Accurate moon and tide info for local areas

  • Would be better with more fishing features

Casio Pro Trek Tough Solar Digital Sports Watch

A tough watch with a lot of fishing features. It can also charge using solar power so you don’t need to worry about it running out during your adventure.

Casio Pro Trek Tough Solar Digital Sports Watch

The Casio Pro Trek Tough Solar Digital Sports Watch is a little better for fishermen than the Casio we looked at above thanks to the extra features.

This Casio sports watch not only gives you the moon and tide data, it also has a barometer for storm warnings plus a weather prediction graph so you know what’s coming.

The Casio Pro Trek also has an altimeter to let you know your elevation, which is useful when fishing in the mountains to confirm your location on a map for example.

Thermometer

The thermometer is also handy for working out the water temperature, and there is also a compass for making sure you’re going in the right direction when exploring or looking for the way home.

Solar Power

My favorite thing about this Casio is that it uses solar to charge while it sits on your wrist.

This means you’ll never run out of battery, no matter how long an adventure you’re on.

It does take a long time to fully charge, but using this Casio outside each day is enough to keep it topped up.

Durability

The Casio Pro Trek does well from a durability standpoint too with 200 meters of water-resistance and a dial that sits in a resin case with a tough mineral glass face. You can bash it around without any concerns.

The only negative to this Casio watch is that the alarm is a little quiet.

Specs

  • Model: PRW2500R
  • Dial size: 2 inches
  • Dial material: Resin case with mineral dial window
  • Strap Material: Plastic
  • Watch Movement: Japanese Quartz
  • Display: Digital
  • Water-resistance: 200 meters

Pros

  • Solar-powered so it never dies
  • Accurate tide and moon data
  • Easy to switch between all the features
  • Gives you storm alerts through the barometer
  • Accurate compass for finding your way
  • Weather prediction graph so you know what’s coming

Cons

  • Takes 179 hours of daylight to fully charge the watch
  • The alarm sound is very soft

Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire

An awesome watch for any fisherman who’s looking for some GPS in their lives to navigate around the sea and lakes with.

Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire

The Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire is an awesome watch for any fisherman who’s looking for some GPS in their lives to navigate around the sea and lakes with.

Networks

The Fenix 5 Sapphire has great coverage by using both GPS and GLONASS networks, to give you excellent accuracy and a quick position fix.

With the GPS you can follow routes, mar fishing spots, see where you’ve been and get back to anywhere you have marked no matter the weather.

Power

The battery life in GPS mode is a minimum of 24 hours on these watches, more than enough for a fishing trip.

The compass is super accurate and simple to see on the huge dial, and the barometer lets you know about storm warnings.

Connectivity

You can connect your phone to these watches too, so you won’t miss an important text or email when you’re fishing.

These watches would be better for fishermen if they had tide data, but for a lake fisherman, this doesn’t matter.

The buttons can be pressed by mistake quite easily, which involves some fiddling to fix, and the watch is quite hard to understand how to use in the beginning so be patient with it.

Specs

  • Model: Fenix 5
  • Dial size: 47 mm
  • Dial material: Sapphire crystal glass and stainless steel
  • Strap Material: Silicone
  • Watch Movement: Digital

  • No tide data

Casio Pro Trek Quartz Sport Watch

It’s an incredibly simple Casio to use and it has a 10-year battery, so you can go and go without any need for a replacement.

Casio Pro Trek Quartz Sport Watch

This Casio Pro Trek Quartz Sport Watch is about as simple as a fishing watch you can get.

It’s as affordable as a Casio watch can get too, let alone one to fish with.

Durability

The good things about it are that this Casio is pretty durable with a shock-resistant build, 100-meter water-resistance and it does tell the: time, date, and have a stopwatch too – there is also an LED light so you can find your way in the dark.

Battery and Features

It’s an incredibly simple Casio to use and it has a 10-year battery, so you can go and go without any need for a replacement.

The only useful features for fishing on this Casio are the moon phase function and the fact it tells you when is the best time to fish based on the moon phase.

This, however, is a gimmick in my eyes that Casio put in there for enthusiastic kids. There’s no chance a watch can tell you when the best time to fish is, but it might get it right by chance.

Specs

  • Model: WS-1200H-3AVCF
  • Dial size: 45 mm
  • Dial material: Resin and glass
  • Strap Material: Plastic
  • Watch Movement: Quartz
  • Display: Digital

  • The fish timer is a gimmick, not accurate

What’s A Fishing Watch?

Quite simply, a good fishing watch is just like a normal watch that tells you the time but also has useful features for fishing.

The features can be anything from a GPS system and compass to letting you know the tide times and moon phases.

What Makes A Fishing Watch Different?

The main difference between fishing watches and normal watches is the additional features that come with fishing watches.

They give you data like sunrise and sunset times, a tide tracker, moon phase info, or a GPS system.

It’s not just the features that make fishing watches different from regular watches, it’s also their build.

Durability

Fishing watches are designed to handle the elements, whether it’s freezing temperatures for ice fishing or being able to live in saltwater.

Their materials and casings are far more robust than regular watches, and they are water-resistant to much larger depths, like 100m instead of 50m.

Why Buy A Fishing Watch?

Man Holding a Fly Rod
Man Holding a Fly Rod

Having a watch for fishing makes life a lot easier. You can plan your fishing moves a lot faster without having to pause.

Let’s take flats fishing for example where timing your spots based on the tides is of the utmost importance.

Arrive on a flat at the wrong tide and there won’t be a fish in sight, but arrive on the right tide, and you’ll see floods of bonefish, tarpon, or permit.

Tides

Tide watches will keep you updated on the water movement at all times so you can simply look at your wrist and know immediately, let’s go to this flat, the fish are about to start arriving.

The same goes for other features like knowing the moon phases for planning your next fishing trip or having a barometric pressure alarm set to warn you of changing weather conditions so you can get out if you need to.

What Makes A Good Fishing Watch?

The best fishing watches tell you all the data you want to know, have all the features you’ll find useful, are comfy to wear, have a good battery life, and are built to survive any fishing situation.

If you can tick all the boxes, and the main ones like data and features come down to personal preference, then you’ll have an incredibly useful fishing watch that’ll last for years and be a valued addition to all your fishing adventures.

Things To Consider When Buying A Fishing Watch

Smartwatch on Top of Wood Surface

Durability

We know as fishermen that our gear has to be able to handle a lot and durability is always something to look for in any bit of fishing equipment, especially a fishing watch.

Your hands to all of the work while you’re fishing and this puts a fishing watch into dangerous situations.

When you’re leading a deep-sea fish like a marlin or grabbing a 100lb tarpon by the mouth and it decides to shake and rattle your bones against the side of the boat, your fishing watch is going to be right there with you, and it needs to be durable enough to survive.

NOTE

Durability comes down to materials and build, and you should look for band material like a silicone strap or a nylon strap, and features like shock resistance or a stainless steel case.

Water Resistance

The best watch for fishing will be highly water-resistant.

After all, it’s going to live next to or in the water the entire time you’re using it.

To survive it needs to shed water like a duck’s back and make sure none of it penetrates the inner workings.

The minimum water-resistant rating for fishing watches should be 50 meters.

That’s not to say you’ll be swimming around fishing at those depths, that’s pretty much impossible without a submarine.

TIP

A 50m plus rating is enough to make sure the watch is made well and that the water-resistant rating will last.

Comfort & Display

Like I mentioned before, your hands do all the work while you’re fishing, and having an uncomfortable fishing watch is likely to hinder your fishing experience.

You’ll be distracted and fiddling with it to move it around instead of focusing on fishing.

Size

Picking a comfortable fishing watch comes down to the size of the dial window display and what you find comfortable on your wrist. It’s a personal choice but I’m sure you’ve worn watches before, and kind of know what size suits you.

Display

You’ll also need to ensure you pick a fish watch that has an easy to read display, so you don’t go for too small a dial window either.

NOTE

If you’re fly fishing often, remember that your line can easily catch on a fishing watch when you cast, so make sure to think about any snagged edges of the dial window that might get in the way when looking for your fishing watch.

Cost

Annoyingly, like most fishing equipment, the higher the price of the best fishing watches you’re looking at, the more features they’re likely to have.

This makes it even more important to think about what features you need, want, and would like before you go searching, especially if you’re on a budget.

Features

Smartwatch Compass
Smartwatch Compass

Compass

A compass is a useful tool for every fisherman.

They get you out of trouble or help you find a direction while you’re getting home for a day at sea or looking for a new river in the mountains you’ve spotted on google earth.

A lot of fishing watches come with a digital compass as they’re far more effective than a miniature dial compass.

GPS

The best fishing watches come with GPS that lets you mark waypoints, follow a route, or record your tracks.

A GPS system is an incredibly useful feature for any lake or ocean fishermen to use.

You don’t have many reference points when you’re in large bodies of open water, and the only way to record and then return to a fishing spot accurately is with a GPS.

Traveling

Fishing Rod on a Boat
Fishing Rod on a Boat

Also, navigating across a huge flat or lake during a torrential rainstorm is impossible without a GPS, as you can’t see more than 5 meters in front of you.

If you have marked home on your fishing watches GPS, you can now find it, and follow your watch to safety.

Barometer

Some fishing watches come with a barometer that tracks barometric pressure to warn you of changing weather conditions.

When a storm is coming in, the barometric pressure changes quite dramatically and the best fishing watches will let you know with enough time to try to get to safety or shelter before it hits.

Thermometer

Fish change their behavior based on the temperature of the water, and wouldn’t it be great to know the temperature of the water you’re fishing in so you can change your tactics as required? Of course, it would.

Some of the best fishing watches have a built-in thermometer so you can measure both the air and water temperature.

On a cold day, you’ll know the fish are deeper to find warmer water, on a warmer day, they might find a shady spot to cool down in. You can use all this info to find more fish and learn more about their movements based on temperature.

Tides And Moon Phase Calendar

Tides are connected to moon phases, and when the moon is aligned with the sun, you get a spring tide and when it’s not aligned, a neap tide.

If you’re a sea fishing enthusiast, you know you have to live by the tides to be successful, as they dictate fish movement more than anything.

TIP

The best fishing watches are also tide watches and offer up all the data you need around the current moon phase and tides, so you can know where to fish and when.

Conclusion

The world of fishing watches is a diverse one as you can see.

There are quite a few to choose from and you can have a lot of features or not so many.

The key to finding the right one is to make sure it has the features you need and that it will survive the fishing hardships you put it through.

Top Pick

The best one overall in my eyes is the Garmin Quatix 5, but I’m biased as I kind of owe it my life when the GPS and compass got me out of trouble.

This watch is durable and full of every feature you need on the water, heck if you have a boat and a Garmin chart plotter you can use it to remote control the auto-pilot.
