Why Use Fluoro Instead Of Mono line?

Fishing Line and Tools
Fishing Line and Tools

There are a lot of reasons why fluoro is better than mono and the main one is that fluoro is invisible to fish where mono is not. The refractive index of fluorocarbons is similar to that of water which makes it nearly invisible in water. This is key to convincing fish to eat your lure, fly, bait, or whatever it is you are using.

Fluorocarbon sinks too unlike mono which floats. Most fishing tactics use lures that swim underwater so since fluorocarbon line sinks quickly, it makes it easier to get your lure where it needs to be.

That being said, mono stays on the surface which can be beneficial when fishing top water lures but having the line sink can also be a benefit to get a popper swimming properly.

What Makes One Fluorocarbon Better Than Another?

There are some key things that make one fluoro better than the next. It is all about finding a balance between visibility, diameter, strength, memory, and stretch to suit your type of fishing and needs.

Visibility

While all 100% fluoro is invisible to fish, some is more pure than others but they are pretty much all as effective as the next, except for in one situation. Fluoro coated lines are way more visible than 100% fluoro lines so be sure to read the fine print when you are buying.

Is Fluorocarbon Really Harder To See?

Diameter & Strength

Diameter and strength are linked as the thinner a line gets, the less strength it can have when it comes to fluorocarbon. Thin diameters are great for fishing clear water with spooky fish inside it but you have to be aware of the line’s ability to handle abrasion and its reliability.

I would recommend using thin diameter fluorocarbon lines in clear water but there is no need to use them all the time. Be sure to use thicker diameter fluoro when minimal vis isn’t required from the fishing situation as you will get more strength out of the line and land more fish.

Memory Creates Tangles

a tangle of fishing line
Tangled Fishing Line

Most of the fluorocarbon lines featured above have minimal memory but some of them have a bit of memory too. Memory in a line means the line remembers how it was stored and thus can come off a reel in coils causing tangles.

No one likes tangles as instead of fishing you end up re-rigging or untangling plus if you get a tangle while fighting a fish, chances are it will break off.

This line of thinking only applies to your main line though as when it comes to leaders, memory is less important since leaders are usually tied, used, and thrown away, so a fresh one is put on for each trip.

Stretch

If a line stretches a lot, you have less control over a fish during the fight. With a stretch line, when a fish runs for a snag, it has more of a chance of getting there. Having lower stretch lines means you can stop fish quickly and pull them away from snags so you can land them with ease.
