Is owning a kayak PFD necessary?
It is, of course, up to you if you wear a PFD or not, but I would say it is necessary. It’s doubly important if you own a tandem fishing kayak.
If you fish offshore, in a lake, or in rivers with your kayak, you can easily capsize, bang your head, and you’re usually alone.
Wearing a PFD adds a huge element of safety to your kayak-angling adventures, so if the worst does happen, you will at least float and have the time to recur yourself to be rescued.
Things to consider when buying a kayak angling PFD
Types
The first thing to consider is what type of PFD you might need, and they range from type ii, iii, and up to V.
Each type describes a different type of buoyancy which I’ll explain below. It’s imperative to pick the type you need based on where you will fish.

- Type II’s are for nearshore use where rescue will be quick.
- Type III’s the same as Type II in buoyancy but specialized for sports (like kayaking and fishing).

- Type V is a special use PFD for watersports. They don’t provide a smooch buoyancy as Type II or III but will help you stay afloat.
